Todd,
I used Mapnik to generate an image that I then plugged into Zoomifyer. modestmaps has a built in provider to get you up and running quickly with the tile images Zoomifyer creates.

Hello,
Your timeline looks great! I'm just starting to work with modestmaps on a project dealing with archaeological data. You mentioned that you created your maps with mapnik and then used these in modestmaps. Do you have any code examples that might help me work through this process? I'm still not clear about how to display my own data in modestmaps and would appreciate any suggestions or examples that might help with this. Thanks.
